Wednesday Noon Update:
The forecast tonight is still on track for a cold and snowy New Years Eve. Light snow enters the area a few hours before midnight but the bulk of the accumulating snow should occur around and after midnight. Models are now hinting at the possibility of an intense snow squall line that passes through Connecticut between 4-6AM. This line of snow showers could enhance snowfall and put down another coating to an inch. All in all, we are still looking at a coating to 2" likely for most of the state with best chances near the Rhode Island boarder. Everything should be completely done by around 7AM tomorrow morning. Tomorrow will be bitterly cold with temps falling through the 20s and windchills making it feel like the single digits.
Original Post:
We are expecting another round of light snow coming to Connecticut for New Years Eve festivities. Here's a quick overview:

A weak area of low pressure will pass to the north on Wednesday evening into the overnight hours. An associated cold front with this system will reinforce cold air across the state and snow will develop west to east before midnight. Light snow continues into the overnight hours and comes to an end across the state before daybreak on Thursday. Cold, dry air funnels in behind the front and northwesterly winds will begin to increase. Temperatures overnight will be in the mid to upper 20s and start falling after the cold front moves through. Thursday will be frigid with temps falling below 20 and wind chills in the single digits.

This is a very weak and moisture starved system, so don't expect much more than snow in the air for new years eve with a light coating to an inch for most. Areas in far eastern Connecticut have the best chance of seeing greater than one inch with possibly up to two inches locally. On the other hand, towns closer to the NY boarder in far SW Connecticut may not see much more than a coating. Either way, any snow that accumulates will be light enough to clean up with a broom or leaf blower.

You might expect weather around midnight on New Years Eve to be cold and possibly snowy but the past few years we've had temperatures in the 40s and 50s. In fact, for last year's ball drop weather we had showers and thunderstorms and temps in the 40s. The last time we saw cold and snowy weather on New Years Eve was all the way back in 2009 when light snow moved through the area and accumulated 1-3". Here's the snowfall totals for that system back in 2009.

Stay tuned to social media for any updates regarding this system and have a great New Year!
