December 14th Snowstorm Retrospective

The first accumulating snow for most of the region played out very close to what we expected. Snow moved into the region from SW to NE just before midnight. Some areas right along the coast and especially across Long Island and NYC started as a rain or a rain/snow mix. Everyone changed over to all snow and the rates picked up overnight into the early morning hours as the system gained strength south of us. The heaviest snow occurred just before daybreak and into the early morning hours. By around noon snow quickly came to an end, except for far SE MA where snow continued into the afternoon and night. A cold front moved through the area before the system began which allowed for very cold air to filter in behind the system. Thus, we saw temperatures actually fall during the day on Sunday. Here's a full radar animation of the storm from start to end.

Connecticut: Snowfall totals were very close to what we forecast for the final call. Northern Connecticut generally picked up 1-2" with mainly 2-4" across southern CT. The immediate shoreline came in closer to 4-5.5" where we expected higher amounts to occur. The highest amount in the state occurred in Norwalk with 5.5" and the lowest was East Hartland and Granby with 0.8".

Southern New England: Another good call for Southern New England with the highest amounts across the cape and islands and SE Bristol and Plymouth counties. Lingering snowfall from an inverted trough and ocean effect snow allowed for amounts here to reach the 4-8" range.

Tri-State Area: Heavier snowfall rates here allowed for most of Long Island and central and southern New Jersey to pick up warning level snowfall greater than 6". Mostly 3-6" fell across northern New Jersey, Lower Hudson Valley and SW CT with 1-3" north of that. Warm surface temperatures right in New York City, an urban heat island, made snowfall accumulation difficult and only 2.9" was recorded in Central Park and 2.6" at La Guardia airport.
