Today is the 25th anniversary of the December 30th, 2000 nor'easter that dumped a foot of snow in New York City. In Connecticut amounts ranged from 7-17" west of 91 and 3-7" in the east. This was the first major snowfall for the Tri-State Area and most of Connecticut since the January 7-8th, 1996 Blizzard.

On the morning of December 30th, low pressure began deepening off the Delmarva Peninsula and moved almost due north during the afternoon and evening. This track allowed for a very strong band of snow to develop over New Jersey and the Lower Hudson Valley. Conversely, a track like this allowed for snow to flip to rain in Eastern Southern New England. Snow began to wrap around the system after midnight for most of Connecticut and Southern New England and then completely dissipated by morning. While most of the snow occurred on the 30th, a few inches of wrap around snowfall carried on into the 31st.

When all was said and done a wide area of 15-30" of snow fell in New Jersey and the lower Hudson Valley. In Connecticut, most areas west of I-91 picked up double digits with far less in eastern CT due to the change over to rain. This storm kicked off a very active season notable for it's large snowstorms and blizzards. Two of which were February 5th, 2001 and March 4-6th, 2001.
