Rain has arrived this morning as temperatures slowly rise through the 30s. The rain will pick up in intensity later today into very early Friday morning as temperatures spike into the 40s. This will cause significant snow melt. Snow melt combined with heavy rain on the order of 1-1.5" will cause some flooding concerns with blocked storm drains and unfortunately some basement flooding as the ground is still frozen solid.
During the peak of heavy rain a deep pool of cold air will quickly push into the state and drop temperatures quickly into the 20s. A flash freeze is possible, (still some model disparity cold href and gfs, warm euro) we are using the href and gfs for this forecast which brings in the cold air between 4-8am Friday morning which could create a disaster of a rush hour with roads freezing over as their will be no treatment on the ground due to run off from the heavy rain. If the cold air moves in slower as the euro suggests, this will lessen the problem, if it moves in quickly that will exacerbate the icing issue and then set the stage for a significant freezing rain event which would lead to at least some power outages.
As of right now we expect little to snow snow throughout the state.
Here's a look at the latest href showing freezing rain developing between 6-8am at the shore.
